What is GAVI?

The International Finance Facility for Immunisation Company (IFFIm) is implemented through the GAVI Alliance, an historic alliance of major stakeholders in immunisation. Alliance members include a wide range of development partners: developing country and donor governments, WHO, UNICEF, the World Bank, the vaccine industry (from industrialised and developing countries), research and technical agencies, NGOs, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, and the GAVI Fund. GAVI works with partners to bring millions of new and underused vaccines to children in over 70 countries in the developing world.

The GAVI Alliance is only as strong as the contributions of each partner - at the international, regional and national levels. The specific role a GAVI Alliance partner plays in any specific country is based on the needs of that country. Some examples of the primary objectives of some of the partners are as follows:

  • The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation: invest in global health efforts, especially in support of immunisation and to raise awareness of the value of immunisation.
  • Developing country governments: make certain that the health sector develops effective measures to reach out and provide health services to those most in need.
  • Donor governments: ensure that health gets an adequate proportion of external aid channelled through the sector coordination mechanisms.
  • The GAVI Fund: provide grants to eligible countries to purchase vaccines, procure and transport immunisation supplies, train healthcare workers, and to support health system improvement programs.
  • Nongovernmental organisations: with a strong history in the field of child health and immunisation, NGOs provide technical advice and staff to government programs, while others provide additional financial support.
  • The World Bank Group: support national governments' efforts toward sustainable financing mechanisms for immunisation services including vaccine purchase and infrastructure support, through policy dialogue with governments, lending, and funding from the debt relief process.
  • UNICEF: advocate and mobilise leaders from global to community levels to make immunisation of children a key priority for development, work with developing country health officials to procure vaccines.
  • Vaccine industry: contribute actively to the supply of high quality vaccines to the poorest populations, and the development and supply of new breakthrough vaccines.
  • WHO: develop global policies and strategies for immunisation and vaccine development.

You can also make a difference by supporting GAVI's work: A gift of just $30 will provide the resources to help immunise one of the 30 million children born this year who would not otherwise receive any vaccinations. Find out more about how you can make a difference
